Crosslinking induced by irradiation raises selectivity of polymeric adsorbent

Abstract: Amine‐type adsorbents were prepared by radiation‐induced graft polymerization. The sorption behaviors for an individual metal ion of Cu2+ and Pb2+ separately, as well as with mixed Cu2+/Pb2+, were studied in both column and batch mode. Ethylenediamine‐type adsorbent exhibited a high capacity for Cu2+ and Pb2+ at a high flow rate of 1000 h−1, but low selectivity in the mixed Cu2+/Pb2+ solutions. Radiation‐induced crosslinking of the amine‐type adsorbent was performed in water to improve selectivity. Crosslinkin… Show more

“…The four methylene groups of 4HB in the graed chains provide sufficient sites for crosslinking. 43,49 Aer crosslinking, the AO groups in the polymer were rmly xed, and the motion of the graed chains was restrained. 43 In aqueous solution, the chains swell and the rmly xed AO groups can adsorb the template ions of uranyl efficiently.…”

“…In our previous studies, various amine-type adsorbents prepared from RIGP were evaluated for their adsorption of metal ions such as copper, lead, and gold. 19,20 Gold nanostructured microtubes (Au NMTs) were prepared using a tertiary amine group-functionalized polyethylene (PE)-coated polypropylene (PP) nonwoven fabric as a ligand, reductant, and template, taking advantage of the different effects of radiation of PE and PP layers. 20 However, adsorbents prepared in the previously published work contain two steps: preirradiation-induced graft polymerization and then modification.…”

“…Hence, recovering Sc with a fibrous graft adsorbent from hot spring water has been being investigated 4) . Radiation-induced graft polymerization (RIGP) is a superior technique to functionalize a polymer based material like polyethylene 5,6) . The advantage of RIGP is able to generate radicals in a base material, without using an initiator.…”
