Crosstalk analysis of multiwavelength optical cross connects

Abstract: Abstract-This paper presents the results of a crosstalk analysis of four optical wavelength division multiplexed (WDM) cross-connect (OXC) topologies. An optimal set of parameters is determined to reduce the total crosstalk. The scalability of the topologies is presented in terms of wavelengths and input fibers. The total crosstalk in function of the number of cascaded OXC's is compared for the four topologies.Index Terms-Optical communication, optical crosstalk, optical cross connect (OXC), optical switches, … Show more

“…The corresponding simulated BER for MDW, Hadamard and MFH codes systems were 10 −12 , 10 −3 and 10 −4 respectively. Figure 3 (b) and 3 (c) also show the cross-talks experienced by Hadamard and MFH codes [10]. The cross-talk was not present in MDW code.…”

“…FBG or OC, will not be considered. Following a similar method as in [3], the worst case optical power at the output of the first stage, see Figs. 2 and 3a, can be given as: (1).…”

“…At the output of an N × N OXC, using the same definitions of coherent crosstalk and incoherent crosstalk as in [3], we have: devices with X OC = -55dB and X FG = -45dB, the minimum achievable crosstalk is -40 dB which is limited by the X FG . In equation (5), the function of incoherent crosstalk is symmetric to the variables of X FG and X OC , therefore, the same profiles will be achieved if X FG and X OC are replaced by each other.…”

“…WDM networks are very promising due to their flexibility and possibility of upgrading the existing optical fiber networks to WDM networks [1]. The OXC is an essential network element enabling reconfigurable optical networks, where lightpaths can be set up and taken down as needed [2]- [4].…”
