Crotalariosis equorum (“jaagsiekte”) in horses in southern Mozambique, a rare form of pyrrolizidine alkaloid poisoning

Abstract: Twenty-eight horses in southern Mozambique died after exhibiting severe respiratory distress. At necropsy, the overinflated lungs did not collapse, had prominent rib impressions, and were fibrotic and emphysematous. Microscopically, prominent proliferation of nonciliated epithelial (Clara) cells in the terminal bronchioles and pulmonary fibrosis were observed, indicative of chronic pneumotoxicity. Transmission electron microscopy demonstrated hyperplasia, desquamation, and apical bulging of Clara cells into th… Show more

“…The serum biochemistry profile and urinalysis revealed an increase of AST, GGT, ALP, hypoalbuminemia, plasma hyperammonemia and bilirubinuria (table 2). These clinical signs and all of these changes in the reference values suggest liver alterations (Botha et al 2012, Lecocq and Moreira 2006, Stegelmeier et al 2016. The liver sonography showed increased heterogeneity, echogenicity and bile duct dilatation in all horses.…”

“…257,301 Laryngeal and pharyngeal dysfunction has been reported in horses that are homozygous for hyperkalemic periodic paralysis. 307 Several nonrespiratory conditions can also cause respiratory distress. 304 A wide variety of other conditions have been associated with respiratory distress such as pneumothorax, diaphragmatic hernia, choanal atresia, nasopharyngeal cicatrix syndrome, tracheal collapse, and others.…”
