“…It has been shown that when colorful ensembles are presented for a short time (500 ms), observers tend to find the unseen mean hue as familiar as the hues that were present in the original ensemble (Maule et al, 2014), a pattern reminiscent of Ariely's (2001) finding for ensembles of different sizes. This same pattern appears for ensembles of color in a patient with simultagnosia, a condition rendering the patient unable to reliably count more than one or two items (Demeyere et al, 2008), suggesting that the color averaging, as with face averaging in cases of prosopagnosia (Leib et al, 2012), can survive in spite of cognitive deficits limiting the encoding of individual items.…”

“…Much behavioral evidence has been accumulated supporting this notion 6,7,1115,21,99103, but see 104 , although only a few recent fMRI studies have compared the neural representations of ensemble coding and individual processing 105107 . Cant and Xu 105,106 showed that PPA and LO were preferentially engaged in texture perception and object processing, respectively; and Huis in’t Veld and de Gelder 107 showed the greater anticipatory and action preparation activity in the areas including IPL, SPL, SFG, and premotor cortex for interactive body movement of a group of panicked people, compared to an unrelated movement of individuals.…”

“…For example, observers can extract the mean size from a set of circles of different sizes seen for 500ms, but are relatively poor at identifying individual members of the set [2]. Sensitivity to summary statistics has been demonstrated in a variety of perceptual domains, including size [e.g., 2, 3-5], orientation [e.g., 6,7], facial expression [e.g., 8,9,10], facial identity [e.g., 10,11,12], and color [e.g., 13,14,15]. Much of this research has focused on whether the mean value of an ensemble has a special perceptual salience.…”
