Crown architecture and its role in species interactions in mixed boreal forests

Abstract: The species specific growth patterns make plastic crown architecture respond in different manner to different environments modifying their influence to neighbours. The main aims of this thesis were to separate the effect of neighbour species identity from the abundance, size and proximity of the neighbours in between-tree competition and to link crown architecture with hydraulic architecture by identifying the associated within-tree variation of crown traits. The empirical part of the work was based on digitisi… Show more

“…The increase in branching angles is greater in the upper crown layers than in the middle and lower layers. This vertical distribution is in accordance with several studies (Zeide 1991;Deleuze et al 1996;Baldwin and Peterson 1997;King 1998;Mäkinen and Colin 1998;Ishii et al 2000;Gielen et al 2002;Ruan 2003;Du et al 2010;Beaulieu et al 2011;Lintunen 2013;Yoshimura 2013;Wu 2014). However, branching angles and the range in vertical variation of the branching angles of Luotian were remarkably larger than those of Lanceolata; 71.8% of the branching angles in Luotian were more than 90°, while 97.4% of the branching angles in Lanceolata were B 90° (Fig.…”

“…In addition, competition (inter-, and intra-specific) pressure highly determines the growth rate and development of the vegetation (Bögre et al, 2008, Grassi andGiannini, 2005). Lintunen (2013) found out, that crown architecture of the species (Betula pendula and Pinus sylvestris in this case) responded to increased competition intensity primarily by reducing branch number and size. Further, she states: 'Lower overall growth but added height growth was found in mixed stands of birch and pine, when a tree was surrounded by interspecific neighbours compared to trees surrounded by intraspecific neighbours'.…”
