CRRT in developing world

Abstract: Acute renal replacement therapy (RRT) is a mainstay therapy, 1 that is applied in 8%-13.5% of critically ill patients with severe acute kidney injury (AKI). [2][3][4][5] Noticeably, a previous survey showed that intermittent hemodialysis (IHD), peritoneal dialysis (PD), and continuous RRT (CRRT) were widely applied for the modalities of acute RRT. 6 Over the past decade, CRRT has become the preferred modality among nephrologists and intensivist community. 7 Data from AKI-EPI study clearly found that CRRT is th… Show more

“…These facts make CRRT an expensive and inaccessible therapeutic modality in most of these countries. 29 Our study supports the results from earlier reports, which found SLED to be a safe and effective treatment for hemodynamically unstable patients with SA-AKI admitted to the ICU. The study provides added information about the cost of SLED and CRRT in a low-income African country.…”

“…Experimental CRRT brings us the possibility to study renal support in those unusual clinical scenarios [6]. However, the operational costs associated with maintaining a CRRT apparatus are substantial [13,14]. The high demand for CRRT machines within ICU settings also precludes their exclusive allocation for the purpose of experimental research [15].…”
