Cruise Passengers' Expenditure in the Caribbean Port of Call of Cartagena de Indias: A Cross-Section Data Analysis

Abstract: The cruise industry has become a significant component of the Colombian tourism economy and Cartagena de Indias has become the largest cruise port in the country. This paper provides a better understanding of the cruise industry by considering the expenditures of cruise ship passengers disembarking in Cartagena de Indias as a key variable in the economic analysis of the costs and benefits. The authors estimate two cross-sectional regression models for the cruising expenditure, showing the existence of differen… Show more

“…Th ey showed that heavy spenders are distinguishable from the other segments in terms of income levels, hours spent out of the ship, nationality, age and their spending pattern. Brida et al (2012) estimated two cross-sectional regression models for the cruise expenditures, showing that the group size the visitors travel with and the mobility the visitors have within the country are the most important variables to explain individual expenditure behaviour. Th ey provided a better understanding of the cruise industry, considering the expenditure of cruise ship passengers disembarking in the ports of call of Montevideo and Punta del Este as a key variable in the economic analysis of the cost and benefi ts.…”

“…Equally used is the cross-section analysis (Parrilla, Font and Nadal, 2007;Brida, et al, 2012;Webster and Ivanov, 2014;Santana-Gallego, Ledesma-Rodríguez and Pérez-Rodríguez, 2016), which, although it does not allow time gap observations, is more accurate when is studied the spatial component of the multiplier effect, as well as the spatial interaction between the units. The use of both methods is less common, but occurs when econometric data are combined with sociological or other type of data (Nelson, Dickey and Smith, 2011;Dogru and Bulut, 2018).…”

“…With regard to the travel-related characteristics of the cruise passengers, it has been indicated that bigger the size of the group, higher the expenditure (Brida et al, 2012a(Brida et al, , 2012b(Brida et al, , 2014(Brida et al, , 2015. The incidence of the frequency of cruising and the number of visits to a destination is not clear.…”
