“…These observations agree with those of previous investigations along the Brazilian coast (see Ribeiro et al, 2003;Bezerra & Coelho, 2006). The superfamilies Majoidea and Pilumnoidea are the most common groups that occur on sponge banks, which seems to reflect the affinity between these animals in symbiosis, as reported previously by Bezerra & Coelho (2006).…”

“…Pinheiro et al, 1997) and the bryozoan Schizoporella unicornis (cf. Mantelatto & Souza-Carey, 1998), where 5 and 20 crab species were found, respectively; as well as for other sponge banks along the Brazilian coast, as reported by Duarte & Nalesso (1996) and Bezerra & Coelho (2006), who found 9 and 6 brachyuran species, respectively. However, this greater richness is due mainly to a few abundant species.…”

“…These perforations resemble the sieve pores or plates such as those observed in the habitats of endolithic alpheids, including A. simus in the Caribbean (Cortes, 1985;Fischer and Meyer, 1985;Kropp, 1987;Werding, 1990). By means of these plates, the shrimp communicate with the environment outside their habitation, extending the second chelate pereopods through the perforations to pick up debris and take it into the galleries (Kropp, 1987;Werding, 1990 (Christoffersen, 1979;1998;Bezerra and Coelho, 2006). The eastern Pacific records correspond to S. digueti Coutière, 1909 (which also corresponds to multiple species) (A.…”
