“…An auxin-type compound, 2-naphthoxyacetic acid, was successfully used at a concentration of 1 mg L −1 to recover embryogenic cell suspensions of several Vitis cultivars, leading to survival ranging from 42 to 82% and subsequent plant regeneration [ 230 ]. Meta-Topolin [N6-(3-hydroxybenzyl)adenine], an aromatic cytokinin, was found to be effective during the recovery of Corylus avellana buds and resulted in the same or significantly better regrowth than BA, depending on cultivar [ 231 ]. Meta-Topolin is reported to increase in vitro shoot production, reduce abnormalities during development, and alleviate shoot tip necrosis in delayed senescence in different plant species [ 232 ].…”

“…The traditional nursery propagation method of hazelnuts is based on the use of suckers from mound layering, a time-consuming technique with low efficiency at the commercial level ( Mardani et al, 2020 ). Therefore, the micropropagation method is not only considered as an appropriate alternative for producing high quality, disease-free, and true-to-type hazelnut plants, independent from the season and environmental conditions ( Debergh et al, 1991 ), but also it represents a valuable tool for plant biodiversity conservation ( Sgueglia et al, 2018 , 2019 ). However, hazelnut genotypes commonly show a difficult in vitro establishment due to surface sterilization failure, strictly related to the very common problem of endogenous contamination, showing even after weeks or months after culture initiation, besides to the lack of young plant material ( Hand et al, 2016 ; Javed et al, 2017 ).…”

“…However, since heterozygosity is high in hazelnut cultivars, clonal preservation, based on cryopreservation of shoot tips or axillary buds, is much more desirable than seeds or pollen preservation [45][46][47][48][49][50]. Recently, a study performed on cryopreservation of two Italian hazelnut cultivars showed the possibility of the application of an encapsulationdehydration method on axillary buds excised from in vitro growing shoots [51].…”
