Cryptic within cryptic: genetics, morphometrics, and bioacoustics delimitate a new species of Eleutherodactylus (Anura: Eleutherodactylidae) from Eastern Cuba

Abstract: We studied the variation in genetics, bioacustics, and morphology in Eleutherodactylus glamyrus, a regionally endemic frog species restricted to high elevations in the Sierra Maestra Massif, Western Cuba that was originally described as a cryptic species hidden under the name E. auriculatus. Genetic analysis of mtDNA sequences of the 16S and cob genes identify two allopatric and strongly supported mitochondrial clades (phylogroups) which also showed no haplotype sharing in the nuclear Rag-1 gene. Bioacustic, a… Show more

“…nov. (Maya) the call samples come from Mexico (Chiapas), and the H. fleischmanni call samples come from Costa Rica (see Vargas-Masís, 2019;Zamudio-Torres et al, 2020). We used the calls (peak frequency, bandwidth, call duration) to compare populations and species identification since some authors suggest that bioacoustics analyses may be a reliable and effective tool in diagnosing and delimiting species (Köehler et al, 2017;Rodriguez et al, 2017). In addition, recent evidence suggests differences between call traits within genetic groups of H. viridissimum comb.…”

“…nov. Therefore, by analyzing the calls of the glassfrog from El Salvador it is possible to have notions about their taxonomy (Köehler et al, 2017;Rodriguez et al, 2017;Mendoza-Henao et al, 2020), and as well as knowing the characteristics of their calls, aspects that to date have not been studied.…”

“…Cuba is home to 57 currently recognized species of frogs belonging to the genus Eleutherodactylus (Rodríguez et al 2017). Several bioacustic and ethological studies have addressed these frogs Alonso et al 2007;Díaz and Cádiz 2007;Rodríguez et al 2010), but only addressed anuran movement patterns and vocal activity during the nocturnal cycle.…”

“…For frogs as well as some other vocalizing taxa (e.g., insects, birds), otherwise cryptic species can often be differentiated by their audial signature, and bioacoustic analysis is an important tool for recognizing new or overlooked species [ 9 ]. Investigations have uncovered cryptic species in a variety of settings, including surprising locations and among presumably well-known taxa [ 8 , 10 12 ].…”
