Crypto-tobiano horses in Hucul breed

Abstract: ABSTRACT:The aim of the study was to verify the hypothesis that the crypto-tobiano horses which do not exhibit the full tobiano white-spotting pattern nonetheless transmit the dominant To gene to the progeny. The study was conducted on the Hucul population. Seven horses with white patches on their limbs, and with or without a small patch on the head, neck or trunk, were selected. At least one of the parents of the horses had to be tobiano or crypto-tobiano. Occasionally such horses produced a tobiano foal from… Show more

“…The phenotype of these horses probably represents the tail of the natural distribution of total depigmented area characteristic of the unique reduction in melanocyte migration for each of these alleles. Previous work observed the production of foals with phenotypes typical of the TO allele from parents with a TO allele but a minimal white phenotype (Stachurska & Jansen 2015). Thus, these horses probably possess genetic value as producers of future spotted foals, although on the surface they do not fit the visual description of a Regular Registry horse.…”

“…Classic tobiano, minimal tobiano, and cryptic tobiano are terms used to describe the diversity of phenotypes displayed by individuals with the Tobiano allele (Figure 2). Classic tobiano horses display large patches of white spotting, with clear borders [1,24,36,41]. Classic markings often spread over the flank, stretch up the neck, and cross the back.…”

“…The white spots which characterize piebald/skewbald Hucul horses correspond to the tobiano pattern (completely dominant To allele) (Stachurska and Jansen 2015;Pasternak et al 2018). The authors of this study claim that phenotypic distinction of heterozygotes from homozygotes is not possible, as in both cases the coat pattern may be similar (Sponenberg and Bellone 2017).…”

“…Therefore, it is possible that some of them were of piebald/skewbald coat colour which was expressed in the form of the crypto-tobiano pattern (Gibała 2012). Stachurska and Jansen (2015) presented examples of misclassified Huculs with the crypto-tobiano pattern in their paper.…”
