Cryptosporidiosis in Colombian children with HIV/AIDS infection

Abstract: Introduction: Enteric cryptosporidiosis in children with HIV/AIDS is an important cause of morbidity and mortality. Objective: To determine the prevalence of Cryptosporidium spp. in feces, via the Ziehl Neelsen modified technique, among Colombian children with HIV/AIDS and to determine possible associations. Methodology: Prevalence study in 131 children with HIV/AIDS at the Hospital Universitario del Valle in Cali, Colombia. We evaluated clinical records, laboratory results, environmental factors, and socio-d… Show more

“…However, in our study, there was a low infection frequency of these protozoa, with a prevalence of 0,5% for each parasite. In Colombia, there are variable data concerning the Cryptosporidium prevalence in HIV patients, which ranged between 2.5 to 51.4% (3,6,9,10,(25)(26)(27)(28). Despite that molecular methods such as PCR have shown great sensitivity in Cryptosporidium detection, and allow the identification of species, most of the studies on the HIV population in Colombia are based on staining techniques.…”

“…Factors such as the highly resistant nature of the eggs in moist soil, long standing patency, high rate of reinfections despite effective anti-helminth therapy and the unavailability of vaccines, have all been associated with a high dispersal of Ascaris and Trichuris , not only in human hosts but also in other vertebrate hosts ( Schüle et al., 2014 ; Easton et al., 2019 ; Cools et al., 2021 ). In addition to the human parasite A. lumbricoides , ascariasis infection of swine by the highly prevalent species Ascaris suum is also known for its pathogenic effects in domestic pigs and its impact in livestock productivity ( Dold and Holland, 2011 ; Velasco et al., 2011 ; Cooper and Figuieredo, 2013 ; Miller et al., 2015 ; Katakam et al., 2016 ; Williams et al., 2017 ; Midha et al., 2018 ; Hansen et al., 2019 ; Arora et al., 2020 ; Easton et al., 2020 ).…”

“…A large study in Kenya described a 51.1% prevalence of abdominal pain in children with cryptosporidiosis [ 44 ]. Children with HIV/AIDS in Colombia had a 19% prevalence of abdominal pain [ 45 ].…”
