Cryptosporidiosis in Intensively Reared Barramundi (Lates Calcarifer)

Abstract: Abstract. Two outbreaks of mortality in juvenile barramundi (Lates calcarifer) with a high prevalence of gastrointestinal cryptosporidiosis are described. Juvenile barramundi at a separate hatchery and grow-out facility were demonstrating markedly increased mortality rates. Histological examination in all cases indicated a heavy infection of Cryptosporidium-like organisms within the distal stomach and proximal small intestine. Electron microscopy confirmed a diagnosis of cryptosporidiosis; however, speciation … Show more

“…Shortly thereafter, moderate lymphocytic and plasmacytic gastroenteritis in the fish resulted in losses rising to 1100 fish day − 1 with a total loss of 20 000 fish. Loss is based on the US$ 0•12 fish − 1 value provided in Table 7 2400 Gabor et al (2011) Eimeria sp. A cumulative mortality of up to 30% was reported in 2•5-7 cm juveniles stocked in 5 nurseries (each stocked with 3000-5000 fish) in Ca Mau, Vietnam.…”

“…Cryptosporidiosis is an emerging disease in both wild and farmed fish in numerous countries worldwide (9,14,18). Expensive, time-consuming, and laborintensive histopathology and PCR have been used to diagnose cryptosporidiosis (14,23).…”

“…Certain fish species act as reservoirs of Cryptosporidium sp. (Gabor et al, 2011), and Giardia sp. (Ghoneim et al, 2012), underlining the role that cormorants might play as reservoirs of protozoan parasites due to their elevated fish consumption (Carss, 1997).…”
