Cryptotanshinone but not tanshinone IIA inhibits angiogenesis in vitro

Abstract: Abbreviations: BAEC, bovine aortic endothelial cells; bFGF, basic fibroblast growth factor; BSA, bovine serum albumin; MTT, 3-(4,5-dimethylthizol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyl tetrazolium bromide A bstractIn the course of screening of angiogenesis inhibitor from natural products, cryptotanshinone from Salvia m iltiorrhiza w as isolated as a potent sm all m olecule inhibitor of angiogenesis. Cryptotanshinone inhibits bFGF-induced angiogenesis of BAECs at ten m icrom olar ranges in vitro without cytotoxicity. Tanshinone II… Show more

“…12,13 Cryptotanshinone (CPT), one of the major representative components isolated from Danshen, has been reported to possess various pharmacological activities, such as anti-inflammatory, anti-angiogenic, anti-oxidative, anti-obese, and anti-diabetic functions. [14][15][16][17] Recently, CPT has also been reported to have obvious antitumor activity in a variety of cancer cells, including prostate carcinoma, hepatocarcinoma, rhabdomyosarcoma and melanoma cells. [18][19][20][21][22][23] In breast carcinoma cells, CPT has been shown to inhibit MCF7 cell proliferation by suppressing mTOR mediated CyclinD1 expression and Rb phosphorylation that lead to MCF7 cell apoptosis by inducing stress in the endoplasmic reticulum (ER).…”

“…Tanshinones are the major component of Danshen, the dried roots of Salvia miltiorrhiza Bunge (Labiatae) that is used as a drug in traditional Chinese medicine (Hazra et al, 2004;Hur et al, 2005). Tanshinones have been widely used to treat menorrhalgia, insomnia, coronary disease, and cardiovascular disease (Takahashi et al, 2002;Han et al, 2005).…”
