Crystal and Molecular Structure of the trans‐Hyponitrite Compounds Ph3E(μ‐ONNO)EPh3 (E = Ge, Pb)

Abstract: The synthesis of the trans-hyponitrite compounds Ph 3 E(μ-ONNO)EPh 3 [E = Ge (1), Pb (2)] as well as their crystal and molecular structure are reported. Compound 1 crystallized from toluene/pentane in the trigonal space group R3 with a = 29.7969 (18), b = 29.7969(18), c = 11.8465(6) Å; γ = 120°; V = 9108.8(9) Å 3 ; Z = 12, ρ = 1.461 g·cm -3 , T = 173(2) K. Compound 2 crystallized from toluene/iso-hexane in the triclinic space group P1 with a = 10.0330(2), b = 11.0615(2), c = 24.2080(4) Å; α = 97.3730(10), β = … Show more

“…For example, several group 14 trans -hyponitrite complexes have been prepared by the reaction of Ph 3 EX (E = Ge, X = Br; E = Sn, X = Cl; E = Pb, X = I) with Ag 2 N 2 O 2 (Scheme ). All three compounds were characterized by X-ray crystallography, and, not surprisingly, the trans arrangement of the hyponitrite moiety in trans -Ag 2 N 2 O 2 was retained in the product. Another noteworthy aspect of this chemistry is the orientation of the group 14 elements, which can occupy either an N or S conformation (Scheme ). , Finally, the C derivative Me 3 CONNOCMe 3 can be formed by the reaction of Me 3 CBr with Ag 2 N 2 O 2 (Scheme ). Interestingly, it is reported to decompose above 45 °C, generating tert -butoxy radicals via extrusion of N 2 …”
