Crystal field excitations and magnons: Their roles in oxyselenides Pr2O2M2OSe2(

Abstract: We present the results of neutron scattering experiments to study the crystal and magnetic structures of the Mottinsulating transition metal oxyselenides Pr 2 O 2 M 2 OSe 2 (M = Mn, Fe). The structural role of the non-Kramers Pr 3+ ion was investigated, and analysis of Pr 3+ crystal field excitations was performed. Long-range order of Pr 3+ moments in Pr 2 O 2 Fe 2 OSe 2 can be induced by an applied magnetic field.

“…4). However, no discontinuity was observed in the case of M = S. Such a finding is consistent with previous reports of c-lattice discontinuities in oxyselenides [19,53,54] and the less prominent occurrence of this behavior in the oxysulfides [18]. The discontinuities were attributed to magnetostrictive effects in the oxyselenides.…”

“…Oxygen atoms are contained in the RE layers remniscent of the charge resevoirs of high-T c cuprates. [4,5] Specific attention has been given to iron oxychalcogenides [6][7][8][9] by investigators seeking to discover new iron-based materials in which high-T c superconductivity might be obtained by doping the Mott insulating state. [5,10,11] In addition, the electronic behavior of La 2 O 2 Fe 2 O(S, Se) 2 has been investigated.…”
