“…For MgDS the average area per polar head is 44.1 A 2, compared to the cross section normally required by a hydrocarbon chain in the solid state, that is in the range 19-21 A 2. Average areas per polar head in the range 20-9-29.5 A 2 have been obtained for the SDS crystal phases, whereas a value of 26.6 A 2 has been obtained in the case of the non-hydrated rubidium salt (Coiro & Mazza, 1989).…”

“…In the L c phase, at the lowest temperature, the alkyl groups are regularly arranged in the all-trans conformation. A stoichiometric number of water molecules are arranged as hydrating water around the hydrophilic groups of the surfactant. , In this phase, lateral translational diffusion as well as reorientation attributed to twisting motion around the molecular axis is extremely slow . In the L β phase, at higher temperatures, the conformation of the alkyl groups remains almost all-trans.…”

“…The crystallisation of SDS has been studied using a variety of techniques including optical microscopy (OM), 26,27 differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) 25,27 and X-ray diffraction (XRD) 26,[28][29][30][31][32][33] to elucidate structures and crystallisation kinetics. Although the other dodecyl sulfate crystals have received less attention, single crystal structures 34,35 and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) data 36 are available for RbDS and MgIJDS) 2 , in addition to transition temperatures for KDS and RbDS micellar solutions. 37 For additive studies in particular, SDS has been used as an additive to promote interconversion reactions 38 and tune crystal morphologies, [39][40][41][42][43] however the effects of additives (for example 1-dodecanol) on its crystallisation have only recently received attention.…”
