Crystal structure of 3-methylpyridinium picrate: a triclinic polymorph

Abstract: In the crystal of the title molecular salt, the 3-methylpyridinium cation and the picrate anion are linked via bifurcated N—H⋯(O,O) hydrogen bonds, forming an (6) ring motif. These units are linked via C—H⋯O hydrogen bonds, forming a three-dimensional framework·The compound exhibits anticonvulsant activity.

“…Pyrimidine and its derivatives have been shown to be effective medications (Brown, 1962;Gauthier et al, 1963;Shorvon, 2004;Jain et al, 2006;Tripathi, 2009). In this context, a number of pharmacologically active molecular salts with different barbiturate entities and cationic counter parts have been described (see for example : Rajamani & Kalaivani, 2015;Gomathi & Kalaivani, 2015). Herein, we describe the synthesis and crystal structure of the title molecular salt, which has been shown to exhibit anticonvulsant and hypnotic activities.…”

“…data reports Previous attempt in our laboratories to synthesize carbon-bonded anionic sigma complex with two heterocyclic moieties (substituted imidazole and pyridine) from the ethanolic solution containing 2-chloro-1,3,5-trinitrobenzene, hydantoin and 3-methylpyridine yielded 3-methylpyridinium picrate, a triclinic polymorph (Gomathi & Kalaivani, 2015). In the present work, a similar attempt with 2-methylpyridine instead of 3-methylpyridine in the reaction mixture, yielded 2-methylpyridinium picrate which crystallizes in the triclinic system with space group P1.…”

“…The isoquinoline unit also displays a wide spectrum of activity and it is an important component of many biologically active alkaloids (Montalban, 2011). Since 2008, we have been periodically synthesizing new barbiturate derivatives and exploring their anticonvulsant activity (Kalaivani et al, 2008;Kalaivani & Malarvizhi, 2009;Kalaivani & Buvaneswari, 2010;Manickkam & Kalaivani, 2011;Babykala & Kalaivani, 2012;Buvaneswari & Kalaivani, 2013;Vaduganathan & Doraisamyraja, 2014;Gomathi & Kalaivani, 2015). The title molecular salt, which is a new derivative of 1,3dimethylbarbituric acid (barbiturate), was recently obtained by our group.…”
