Crystal structure ofS-hexyl (E)-3-(4-methylbenzylidene)dithiocarbazate

Abstract: In the title compound, C15H22N2S2, the dithiocarbazate group adopts an E conformation with respect to the C=N bond of the benzylidene moiety. In the crystal, molecules are linked by pairs of N—H⋯S hydrogen bonds, forming inversion dimers with an R 2 2(8) ring motif. The dimers are linked via C—H⋯π interactions, forming chains propagating along [100].

“…The maximum deviation from the mean plane is shown by the thioketone atoms S1, S3, S5 and S7 in the four independent molecules (r.m.s deviations of 0.086, 0.118, 0.138 and 0.183 Å , respectively). The bond lengths and angles are comparable to those reported for S-hexyl (E)-3-(4-methylbenzylidene)dithiocarbazate (Howlader et al, 2015) and S-hexyl (E)-3-(4methoxybenzylidene)dithiocarbazate . The hexyl chain in all four molecules has an extended anti-zigzag conformation.…”

“…Bidentate Schiff bases of S-methyl or S-benzyl dithiocarbazates and their metal complexes have received considerable attention for their possible bioactivities (Chan et al, 2008;How et al, 2008;Zangrando et al, 2015;Ali et al, 2002;Chew et al, 2004;Crouse et al, 2004). As part of our ongoing structural studies of S-containing Schiff bases, we report herein on the structure of a molecule having a hexyl chain, similar to other ligands reported by our group Howlader et al, 2015) but differing in their ability to act as tridentate ligands in metal coordination .…”

“…These geometrical parameters agree with those reported for similar nickel complexes either when ligands assume a trans (Islam, et al, 2011;Islam, et al, 2014;Zhang, et al, 2004) or a cis configuration (Chan, et al, 2008;Li, et al, 2006). The ligand, recently reported (Howlader, et al, 2015), underwent rotation about the C9-N2 by 180° in order to allow the N,S chelating behavior towards the metal.…”

“…There has been immense interest in nitrogen-sulfur donor ligands since the report on S-benzyldithiocarbazate (SBDTC) (Ali & Tarafder, 1977). Since then, a number of Schiff bases have been derived from SBDTC (Crouse et al, 2004;Howlader et al, 2015). The versatile coordination chemistry and increasingly important biological properties of ligands derived from SBDTC have also received much attention (Zangrando et al, 2015).…”
