Crystallicutis gen. nov. (Irpicaceae, Basidiomycota), including C. damiettensis sp. nov., found on Phoenix dactylifera (date palm) trunks in the Nile Delta of Egypt

Abstract: The taxonomy of Polyporales is complicated by the variability in key morphological characters across families and genera, now being gradually resolved through molecular phylogenetic analyses. Here a new resupinate species, Flavoceraceomyces damiettense (NOM. PROV.) found on the decayed trunks of date palm (Phoenix dactylifera) trees in the fruit orchards of the Nile Delta region of Egypt is reported..

“…Based on phylogenetic and morphological grounds, Robledo et al confirmed that this taxon should be separated from Perenniporia, and could be recognized as a distinct genus morphologically as well [28]. Previous studies also confirmed that this species formed a clade distinct from the P. medulla-panis clade [5,6,28]. The present study confirms these results from previous studies and formally describes the new genus, Poriella with P. subacida as type species.…”

“…The reason for choosing these two species as outgroup taxa is that they belong to Phanerochaete in Phanerochaetaceae, and are closely related to Irpicaceae (Chen et al 2021), which conforms to the outgroup selection rules. Furthermore, species of Phanerochaete were also selected as outgroups in other phylogenetic studies of Irpicaceae, such as in El-Gharabawy et al (2021).…”

“…Griff. was derived from Ceraceomyces based on the crystals in the hymenium and subiculum of the basidiomata, which includes the brown-rot species C. serpens ( El-Gharabawy et al 2021 ). Both species C. sulphurinus and C. violascens (Fr.)…”
