Crystallization and dielectric behaviour of PLA and PHBV in PLA/PHBV blends and PLA/PHBV/TiO2 nanocomposites

Abstract: The morphology, crystallization behavior and mechanical properties of PLA, PHBV and their blends and nanocomposites with TiO 2 as filler were investigated. An uncommon morphological change was observed with increasing PLA content in the blends, and this complicated the isothermal crystallization kinetics analyses of the different samples. It was, for example, observed that PLA, which do not normally crystallize during the cooling of the sample, showed isothermal crystallization for certain blend compositions. … Show more

“…The different cryofracture behaviour of the starch continuous phase of the films reveals the partial miscibility of the gums in the starch phase, which reinforced the starch matrix, as revealed by the higher structural toughness deduced from the tensile parameters of blend films. The lack of polyester miscibility can also be observed in Figure 1 where different domains of PLA and PHBV can be observed, as previously reported (Gasmi et al, 2019).…”

“…This suggests an interaction between TiO 2 and PLA matrix (Zdraveva et al, 2018;Kaseem et al, 2019). These interactions restrict the mobility of the molecular chains in the PLA amorphous segments enhancing the cooperative motions of the chains which require much more activation energy to occur (Gasmi et al, 2019).…”

“…The addition of nanofillers to the PLA matrix led to a rougher surface. Current works [4,7] show that low concentrations of nano TiO 2 can be well dispersed in PLA. When the nanoparticles are well distributed in the polymer matrix, such a roughness morphology can be observed on the surface, contributing to some increase in the CA [55].…”

“…Poly(lactic acid) (PLA) is an aliphatic thermoplastic polyester considered to be environmentally friendly. It is derived from renewable plant resources, presents properties comparable to petrochemical-based polymers, and it is biodegradable [1][2][3][4]. This polymer shows good physico-mechanical properties, low thermal stability and poor hydrophilicity [5].…”
