The effect of the addition of NiO on the crystallization mechanisms has been studied for SiO2–Al2O3–MgO glass‐ceramics. A detailed Rietveld analysis has been made to determine the chemical composition and the cation distribution in the spinel phase and the evolution of Ni2+ coordination site using diffuse reflectance spectroscopy. Powder X‐ray diffraction (XRD) results show the formation of β‐quartz and spinel and the nickel fraction in the spinel phase decreasing as the plateau temperature increases. The determination of cation distribution in spinel using XRD reveals a preference of Ni2+ and Al3+ for octahedral sites and an increasing proportion of Ni2+ in tetrahedral sites for heat treatments at high temperature (1100°C–1200°C). Diffuse reflectance spectroscopy shows that Ni2+ is mainly fivefold coordinated in the starting glass, playing an important role in the crystallization of the spinel phase and it confirms the presence of tetrahedral and octahedral Ni2+ in the glass‐ceramics. The combination of these two techniques also indicates a chemical heterogeneity of spinel crystals with Ni2+‐rich and Mg2+‐rich zones.

Both the properties and crystallization behavior of xNiO· (2−x)MgO·2Al2O3·5SiO2 glasses for x=0.0, 0.25, 0.5, 0.75, and 1.0 are studied. The glass transition temperature and dilatometric softening temperature decrease as increasing amounts of nickel are substituted for magnesium. The coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) of the glasses is largely independent of the glass composition—the CTE for all nickel containing glasses is ca. 4.0 ppm/K, which is slightly higher than the CTE for the nickel‐free glass (ca. 3.8 ppm/K). The crystallization behavior of the glasses is studied using differential thermal analysis data and high‐temperature X‐ray diffraction data. All glasses crystallize to form a β‐quartz solid solution at the surface; this phase transforms to cordierite at higher temperatures and/or longer annealing times. The crystallization temperature of the β‐quartz is related to the occurrence of phase separation. The temperature at which β‐quartz transforms to hexagonal cordierite increases with increasing amounts of nickel. Glasses where x≥0.50 crystallize to form a spinel phase in the bulk of the glass. The spinel crystallization temperature decreases with increasing amounts of nickel substituted for magnesium. The spinel composition is dependent on the initial glass composition and crystallization temperature. Competing transformation processes (spinel in the bulk and cordierite at the surface) in glasses where x≥0.75 result in a compound activation energy value.

Co 2+ -containing cordierite glasses, of nominal compositions (Mg 1Àx Co x ) 2 Al 4 Si 5 O 18 (with x = 0, 0.2, 0.4, 0.6, 0.8 and 1), were prepared by melting colloidal gel precursors. After isothermal heating at 1273 K for around 28 h, a single-phase -cordierite (high-temperature hexagonal polymorph) was synthesized. All materials were investigated using X-ray powder diffraction and field-emission scanning electron microscopy. The crystal structure and microstructure were determined from X-ray diffraction patterns. Rietveld refinement confirmed the formation of magnesium-cobalt cordierite solid solutions. The unit-cell volume increased with the increase of cobalt content in the starting glass. The crystalline microstructure of the cordierites was interpreted using a mathematical model of a polycrystalline material and characterized by prevalent crystallite shape, volume-weighted crystallite size distribution and second-order crystalline lattice-strain distribution. Hexagonal prismatic was the prevalent shape of -cordierite crystallites. Bimodality in the size distribution was observed and interpreted as a consequence of two paths of the crystallization: the nucleation from glass of -cordierite, which transformed into -cordierite with annealing, or the nucleation of -cordierite directly from glass at high temperatures. Scanning electron microscopy images agreed well with crystalline microstructure characteristics determined from the X-ray diffraction line-profile analysis.
