CSF amyloid β42 and tau levels correlate with AIDS dementia complex

Abstract: There is concern that AIDS dementia complex (ADC) may be complicated by Alzheimer disease (AD). Because AD presence and risk are related to CSF beta-amyloid(1-42) (Abeta42), total tau (t-tau), and phosphorylated tau (p-tau), the authors examined these in ADC, AD, and controls. ADC had significantly decreased CSF Abeta42 and increased t-tau and p-tau concentrations similar to AD, suggesting that ADC may be associated with AD or an AD-like process.

“…Before the advent of antiretroviral therapies, dementia was a common cause of morbidity in HIV, affecting up to 50% of patients (46). Furthermore, Aβ accumulation within the brain and changes in cerebrospinal fluid Aβ levels that mimic AD are observed in these patients and correlate well with cognitive dysfunction (47,48). Although HIV primarily targets CD4 T-helper populations, these cells play a critical role in the induction of Ig class switching by B cells and the maturation of B cells into IgG-producing plasma cells (49).…”

“…Tat can be secreted by infected macrophages and microglia, and transported across the blood-brain barrier (11) has been detected in brain of patients with HAD (12), implicating a possible role in the progression of HAND. Furthermore, some HIV-positive patients exhibiting the HAND phenotype with an increase in Aβ deposition (13,14) or increased levels of Tau and phosphorylated Tau (pTau) protein (15,16) …”
