Csf polyamines: A new and important means of monitoring patients with medulloblastoma

Abstract: An earlier study that showed the importance of cerebrospinal fluid polyamine levels for monitoring patients harboring medulloblastomas was expanded to 210 determinations evaluated in 32 patients. The results and conclusions of our earlier study have been confirmed in this expanded patient group. Patient status, with regard to either progression or regression of tumor, was determined by correlating polyamine levels with neurologic examination, computerized tomography, radionuclide scan, cerebrospinal fluid cyto… Show more

“…Both Fulton [24] and Marton [25] showed that some patients with medulloblastoma had increased polyamines and repeated CSF polyamine determinations are accepted as a benefit in control of patients with medulloblastoma [23,[26][27][28]. Edwards et al [29] and Felzenhauser et al [30] have shown no false positives in more than 100 children in remission from medulloblastoma.…”

“…1 and 2. Marton [25] found that clinical changes could precede elevation of CSF polyamines. Our experience with RBC polyamines is similar but the spermine levels appear to reflect the clinical situation in the majority of the cases of recurrence.…”

“…This was found to correlate well with the degree of malignancy of these tumors (12). Extensive efforts have been made to establish the potential of CSF polyamine levels in both long-term and short-term evaluation of the efficacy of therapies for patients with brain tumors (13)(14)(15)(16)(17)(18)(19).…”

“…In some institutions, protocols call for repeat CSF cytological examination 10-14 days after surgery if the only positive study is a positive cytology in the immediate post-operative period. Some centers are also measuring CSF polyamines (putrescine and spermidine) as evidence of dissemination [56].…”
