CT of the Middiaphyseal Femur: Cortical Bone Mineral Density and Relation to Porosity

Abstract: CT is effective in the measurement of age- and site-related changes in cBMD. Decreases in cBMD are closely correlated with increased cortical porosity.

“…Gatti and colleagues, (23) however, included more severe phenotypes, which may explain the difference of our findings. We expected patients with type I OI to have increased cortical porosity compared with controls due to increased bone turnover, (25,26) but were unable to show a significant difference between the groups. This may be due to lack of statistical power or to the fact that HR-pQCT cannot capture cortical pores that are smaller than the image resolution of 82 mm.…”

“…Therefore, quantification of bone water is of considerable interest. Further, it may provide a means of measuring pore volume fraction, which has been shown to increase with age (38). Furthermore, increased porosity impairs the mechanical competence of bone and thus increases the risk of hip fracture, as has been shown histologically (39).…”

“…Ayrıca, Martins ve arkadaşlarının Ti-Nb alaşımlarını geleneksel toz metalürjisi yöntemiyle ürettikleri çalışmada, 1500 °C sinterleme sonucunda %99.73 relatif yoğunluk elde etmişlerdir [12]. Numunelerde elde edilen porozite değerleri insan kortikal kemiği ile uyumludur (% 1-16) ancak literatürde [13], [14] . yaş ilerledikçe kortikal kemiğinin porozite miktarının artacağı rapor edilmiştir.…”
