Ctenolepisma longicaudatum Escherich (1905) Became a Common Pest in Europe: Case Studies from Czechia and the United Kingdom

Abstract: Synanthropic invasive silverfish, Ctenolepisma longicaudatum, has been recently reported to cause nuisance in the indoor environment in many European countries. To get more details on the species distribution, the species occurrence was monitored by the authors in the countries where establishment of C. longicaudatum has been revealed in the last years. In Czechia, 20 findings from 14 municipalities in eight regions were recorded within the last three years. In the United Kingdom, 49 cases, including the first… Show more

“…Most Lepismatidae are free-living species that can be found in both natural and seminatural habitats ( Smith 2017 , Mendes 2018 ). Some species live in ant or termite nests as parasites or commensals ( Robla et al 2023 ), and several species can be considered synanthropic, living as human commensals in buildings ( Molero-Baltanás et al 1997 , Mendes 2002 , Hage et al 2020 , Kulma et al 2021 ).…”

“…They can be found in buildings such as museums and, if they are pests, cause damage to objects or are a nuisance to visitors [8][9][10]. Silverfish, notably Ctenolepisma longicaudatum Escherich, 1905 (Lepismatidae, Zygentoma) and Ctenolepisma calvum (Ritter, 1910) (Lepismatidae, Zygentoma), have been introduced in recent years and are spreading in buildings and museums across Europe [11][12][13][14][15][16]. The grey silverfish C. longicaudatum, especially, can damage paper and starch-based objects and materials such as paper, books, photographs, graphic art, or historic wallpaper [9].…”

“…The long-tailed silverfish ( Ctenolepisma longicaudatum Escherich, 1905), formerly known as longicaudata [ 1 , 2 ], Zygentoma; Lepismatidae) has recently emerged as a nuisance indoor pest in several European countries [ 3 – 16 ]. They cause minimal physical damage in private homes, but due to the psychological discomfort from them crawling around on floors, walls, furniture and other objects, they are considered a nuisance problem, particularly in new and otherwise immaculate buildings [ 8 , 15 ].…”
