“…Although Leung et al [14] have developed a model for the power loss versus crack opening relation, it is too complicated to put into practice for sensor applications because the model involves a mechanical analysis (a finite method analysis) and an optical analysis, which are very complex. Also, it seems that the model based on eqs.…”

“…The sensor can detect crack initiation but can neither differentiate between one widely opened crack and many small cracks along the gauge length nor measure crack openings. The fiber optic crack sensor developed by Li et al [14] is based on Michelson white light interferometry. Crack openings can be evaluated by subtracting the elastic deformation of concrete outside strain localization band within the gauge length of the fiber from the total displacement measured by the sensor.…”

“…The fiber surface coating serves as the coupling layer; it also plays an important role in the strain transfer. The strain transfer coefficient has been derived earlier (Ansari and Yuan 1998;Li et al 2004) which is listed below for various conditions:…”

“…Ansari et al [7] developed a ring fiber optic sensor to monitor cracks based on the finding that macro-bend optical loss in fibers increases due to the increase of crack width. Li et al [8] developed a fiber optic sensor based on Michelson white light interferometer to monitor the crack tip width displacement. Shi et al [9] measured the distribution of strain on the surface of concrete structures by Brillouin optical fiber both on transverse and vertical direction to monitor damage fields.…”
