[Cu18H3(S-Adm)12(PPh3)4Cl2]: fusion of Platonic and Johnson solids through a Cu(0) center and its photophysical properties

Abstract: Structural elucidation of the atom-precise thiolate-protected copper nanoclusters (Cu NCs) containing Cu(0) is quite challenging. Here, we report a new adamantane thiol protected [Cu18H3(S-Adm)12(PPh3)4Cl2] (Cu18) NC which reveals the first...

“…Such properties can be explored in developing various sensors. [25][26][27][28][29][30][31] For example, copper-cysteine complexes exhibits have been used as a qualitative/quantitative sensor for ammonia in solutions. 32,33 Therefore, finding a suitable thiol ligand is important to obtain desirable properties from copper-complexes.…”

“…A major reason for this is believed to be the much lower M(I)/M(0) half-cell reduction potential of copper (0.52 V) than those of silver (0.80 V) and gold (1.69 V), which makes the Cu(0)-containing clusters air-sensitive and challenging to achieve. 30,31 To date, only a handful of such copper nanoclusters (Cu 13 , 32 Cu 14 , 33 Cu 18 , 34 Cu 20 , 35 Cu 23 , 36 Cu 25 , 31 Cu 29 , 37 Cu 53 , 38,39 and Cu 61 40 ) have been documented, precluding their comprehensive studies. Except for [Cu 53 (C C P h P h ) 9 ( d p p p ) 6 C l 3 ( N O 3 ) 9 ] ( d p p p = 1 , 3 -b i s -(diphenyphosphino)propane), 38 all of the previously reported copper nanoclusters contain less than five free electrons, while gold and silver nanoclusters bearing eight or more free electrons are conspicuously more prevalent.…”

“…3 A series of ligand-stabilized copper hydride clusters with various hydride coordination modes, including capping, bridging, and interstitial, have been reported. 3,4 Using single-crystal neutron diffraction techniques, the positions of high nuclearity copper hydrides stabilized by dichalcogenolates have been reliably determined. Notable examples are Cu 7 H and Cu 28 H 15 ligated by dithiocarbamate (dtc), 5,6 Cu 20 H 11 , 7 Cu 30 H 18 .…”
