Culex pipiens forms and urbanization: effects on blood feeding sources and transmission of avian Plasmodium

Abstract: BackgroundThe wide spread mosquito Culex pipiens pipiens have two forms molestus and pipiens which frequently hybridize. The two forms have behavioural and physiological differences affecting habitat requirements and host selection, which may affect the transmission dynamic of Cx. p. pipiens-borne diseases.MethodsDuring 2013, blood engorged Cx. p. pipiens mosquitoes were captured in urban, rural and natural areas from Southern Spain. In 120 mosquitoes, we identified the blood meal origin at vertebrate species/… Show more

“…As in the case of other hematophagous insects, mosquitoes show a certain degree of feeding preference, with some species feeding mainly on a particular group of vertebrates, such as birds or mammals, while other species show opportunistic behaviors [11,12]. The common house mosquito Culex pipiens frequently occurs in European urban areas where it may play a central role in the transmission of avian malaria parasites [13][14][15][16]. During the last decades, the invasive Asian tiger mosquito Aedes albopictus has dramatically increased its distribution range from the native area in Asia to other continents [16].…”

“…Culex pipiens have two biotypes: the molestus and the pipiens, these two biotypes are morphologically indiscernible, both forms have been recorded from Iran [20,21]. The pipiens biotype feeds mainly on birds, prefer aboveground habitats and frequently found in rural areas [20,22].…”

“…However, Cx. pipiens show an ornithophilic feeding behaviour (Martínez‐de la Puente et al, ) suggesting the possibility that this parasite could also infect birds (see Kemenesi et al, ; Czajka et al, ).…”
