Culicoides Latreille in the sun: faunistic inventory of Culicoides species (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae) in Mayotte (Comoros Archipelago, Indian Ocean)

Abstract: BackgroundThe south-west insular territories of the Indian Ocean have recently received attention concerning the diversity of arthropods of medical or veterinary interest. While a recent study highlighted the circulation of Culicoides-borne viruses, namely bluetongue and epizootic hemorrhagic disease, with clinical cases in Mayotte (comprising two islands, Petite-Terre and Grand-Terre), Comoros Archipelago, no data have been published concerning the species diversity of Culicoides present on the two islands.Re… Show more

“…The survey confirmed the low specific diversity (five species) [7] compared to Mayotte, a 6-fold smaller volcanic island (374 km 2 ) belonging to the Comoros Archipelago (Fig. 1), where a recent inventory listed at least 17 species including C. bolitinos , C. enderleini , C. imicola and C. kibatiensis [52]. This relatively low diversity in Reunion Island could be linked to its greater geographical remoteness (684 km from Madagascar and 1680 km from the African coastline as opposed to 295 and 485 km for Mayotte, respectively).…”

“…They have a global distribution with species important for veterinary and public health mainly grouped into the genus Culicoides Latreille (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae) comprising about 1,340 species. The Afrotropical region is home to diverse Culicoides species, with over 120 species described in southern Africa alone (Garros et al, 2019;Borkent and Dominiak, 2020). Examples of medically important Culicoides species include invasive species of the Culicoides imicola complex (C. imicola, C. brevitarsis and C. bolitinos) and Schultzei group (C. enderleni, C. kingi, and C. schultzei) (Bakhoum et al, 2013;Leta et al, 2019).…”
