Brazil is a benchmark in sugarcane production, with the state of São Paulo standing out as the largest Brazilian producer. However, for sugarcane suppliers and mills to sustain this activity, there is a need to improve productivity per hectare and reduce production costs. In this regard, this study aimed to propose fuzzy systems to estimate sugarcane productivity based on planted area (Area) and total cost of soil tillage (TCST) for raw material suppliers and mills. To this end, two fuzzy inference systems were constructed for the output variable (productivity) from two input variables (Area and TCST), considering fi ve membership functions (very low, low, medium, high, and very high). Additionally, a survey on 42 sugarcane suppliers and 31 mills in the state of São Paulo was used for model construction. The results showed that the relationship between Area and TCST refl ects on the productivity of sugarcane suppliers and mills in distinct ways. For suppliers, an increase in productivity is observed when there is an almost negative relationship between both input variables. For mills, productivity rises when these variables fl uctuate in the same direction. Therefore, the proposed method is viable and provides relevant information for conjecturing survival strategies for agents in the sugarcane energy sector.

Mechanization is essential to achieve better efficiency agricultural production systems, contributing significantly to rural development. Utilization of agricultural machinery by family farmers allows them to achieve greater productivity, improving the quality of life. However, true quality of life is only likely to be reached when technological advancements are consistent with truly sustainable development. This article aims to analyze whether the current cutting-edge mechanization systems for sugarcane applicable for family farming achieve objectives 2,5,8,9,10,12 and 13 of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). A systematic review of the literature was performed that revealed 31 representative articles that depicted advancements relevant to mechanisation of family farming production systems for sugarcane . These articles were analyzed in an organized way to assess the contribution of agricultural machinery and implements to achieving the SDGs. A comprehensive assessment was carried out in regards to aspects such as the readiness level of the technology (TRL) and the SDGs aimed at gender equality, decent work, economic growth, industry, innovation and infrastructure, reduction of inequality, responsible consumption and production, and actions to mitigate global climate change. The results of the analysis identify the SDG designed to address global climate change as the most critical, understanding that current research aimed at developing technologies to adapt mechanised sugarcane cultivation to family farming situations, do not show sufficient concern regarding the use of fossil fuels.

Food production is extremely dependent on the soil. Brazil plays an important role in the global food production chain. Although only 30% of the total Brazilian agricultural areas are used for crop and livestock, the full soil production potential needs to be evaluated due to the environmental and legal impossibility to expand agriculture to new areas. A novel approach to assess the productive potential of soils, called “SoilPP” and based on soil analysis (0–100 cm) - which express its pedological information - and machine learning is presented. Historical yields of sugarcane and soybeans were analyzed, allowing to identify where it is still possible to improve crop yields. The soybean yields were below the estimated SoilPP in 46% of Brazilian counties and could be improved by proper management practices. For sugarcane, 38% of areas can be improved. This technique allowed us to understand and map the food yield situation over large areas, which can support farmers, consultants, industries, policymakers, and world food security planning.
