The energy dissipation and the evapotranspiration processes, are factors involved in the ecosystem net carbon exchange and are determinants in the ability of a self-regulating system to balance high carbon emissions. To discover these relationships, a corn production system intercropped with coffee was monitored during the first 19 months after the system establishment, to determine the flux of energy, water, gases, and carbon by implementing the eddy covariance technique. From the net carbon exchange ecosystem balance, during the first cycle of corn intercropped with coffee, 63 g C m -2 was fixed. For the next phase of coffee culture, maintaining the corn stalks and coffee branches, 5.4 g C m -2 was emitted. In the second cycle with intercropped corn, the fixation was 291 g of C m -2 ; and in the last period of the first reproductive stage of the coffee trees, 172 g C m -2 was fixed. Throughout the analysis period, the system behaved as a carbon sink with a potential fixation between 4.7 and 5.6 ton C ha -1 . The energy, measured as net radiation, was estimated at 274.53 ± 5.2 W m -2 day -1 , and it was dissipated mainly as sensible heat (26.5% -53.6%), latent heat (45.7% -71, 9%) and soil heat (0.5% -1.6%). The crop coefficient (Kc) in the coffee vegetative stage in the monoculture, fluctuated between 0.79 ± 0.05 and 0.99 ± 0.04. For the intercropping system with corn, the Kc was calculated at 0.84 ± 0.05, 1.05 ± 0.06, 1.60 ± 0.09, and 1.22 ± 0.05 for the vegetative, pre-flowering, maximum foliar development and harvest maturity stages of corn, respectively.

Crop associations are widely recognized as a highly beneficial strategy for agriculture. By combining different crops, optimal production is achieved while minimizing the spread of pests and diseases. This practice offers numerous benefits by allowing maximum utilization of space and mutual adaptation of associated species. It is important to emphasize that crop association is oriented towards the mutual advantage of the species involved, thus guaranteeing favorable results for each of them. In this sense, the behavior of maize growth rates was evaluated in a completely randomized block design with four treatments: maize monoculture; maize and peanut association; maize and cassava association; and maize, peanut, and cassava association. The following variables were evaluated: net assimilation rate (NAR), leaf area index (LAI), relative growth rate (RGR), leaf area ratio (LAR), absolute growth rate (AGR), and leaf area duration (LAD). The association of maize and cassava obtained the highest values NAR (0.002 g cm-2 d-1) and RGR (0.15 g g-1 d-1) compared to the monoculture (0.001 g cm-2 d-1 and 0.08 g g-1 d-1). This happened because maize presented higher leaf production during the vegetative growth stage indicating the physiological efficiency of maize when associated with cassava.

La producción de maíz intercalado en las calles del café durante la fase de levante ha sido una práctica recomendada por Cenicafé para promover la seguridad alimentaria, generar ingresos complementarios y aumentar la sostenibilidad de los sistemas de producción cafetera. Con el objetivo de evaluar el efecto de la densidad de siembra del hibrido de maíz blanco biofortificado con zinc SGBIOH2 sobre la producción de dos ciclos de maíz intercalado y sobre la producción acumulada de dos cosechas de café, se realizó una investigación en cuatro estaciones experimentales de Cenicafé: Naranjal (Caldas), La Catalina (Risaralda), El Rosario (Antioquia) y El Tambo (Cauca). El experimento fue establecido mediante un diseño de bloques completos al azar con cuatro tratamientos de densidad de siembra de maíz intercalado (45.000, 50.000, 55.000 y 60.000 plantas por hectárea) y un testigo absoluto en donde no se sembró maíz, que fueron evaluados en nueve bloques por localidad en parcelas de 48 m2. Los rendimientos de maíz híbrido intercalado incrementaron linealmente en todas las localidades al aumentar la densidad de siembra de 45.000 a 60.000 plantas por hectárea (Pr > F = 0,0001). La producción de café no se afectó por ninguno de los tratamientos de densidad de siembra de maíz (Pr > 0,05), lo que indica una baja competencia de los dos cultivos. Así mismo, la calidad física del café representada en la relación café cereza/café pergamino seco y en el factor de rendimiento en trilla tampoco se vio afectada por ninguno de los tratamientos de densidad evaluados.
