“…For each locus, the best-fit models were estimated based on the corrected Akaike information criterion using the ModelFinder function in iq-tree [20]. Phylogenetic analyses were performed on the basis of Bayesian inference (BI) and maximum-likelihood (ML) approaches, as previously described [14]. The resulting phylogenetic trees were visualized in FigTree version 1.1.2 [21] and subsequently prepared and edited in Microsoft PowerPoint.…”

“…The samples were placed in Ziplock plastic bags and transported to the laboratory. The soil samples were processed and the fungi were isolated using our previously described method [13,14]. The soil samples were mixed with clean, sterile, chicken feathers, approximately 2 cm long, and moistened with sterile water.…”

“…While this manuscript was in review, Zhang et al (2021) reported other four new species of Pseudogymnoascus, isolated from soil in China (P. catenatus, P. fujianensis, P. yunnanensis, and P. zhejiangensis). Our species are different to those described in the paper of Zhang et al (2021).…”

“…These studies have revealed a high variation of species assemblies among samples, locations, and countries [see reviews such as Luplertlop (2018) (42) and Rougeron et al (2018)]. This, coupled with a few non-targeted environmental disclosures of these species in close proximity to human living habitats (5, 22, 43, 44), has emphasized the importance of recognizing these potential infection sources in the environment.…”
