Naturalistic, Developmental, and Behavioral Interventions (NDBIs) are an empirically supported intervention approach for young autistic children and their families. Spanish-speaking (SS) Latinx families have been underrepresented in autism intervention research, limiting our understanding of whether NDBIs are aligned with Latinx family values and belief systems. This study piloted a parent-mediated NDBI, Project ImPACT, within outpatient services for SS Latinx families. We aimed to examine the preliminary impact of Project ImPACT on family and child outcomes while using the Ecological Validity Model to evaluate program adaptations made by bilingual clinicians. Results from 15 families indicated good treatment completion and high satisfaction, alongside significant increases in child social communication skills and parent self-efficacy in supporting their child’s development. Mixed-methods data examining program adaptations indicated the need to provide additional information related to autism, bilingual language development, and service navigation, as well as adaptations to language and metaphors used in the program.

ObjectiveThe current study examined whether the unmet needs of parents of children with autism in Qatar predicted parent well‐being and whether sociodemographic factors and child characteristics were associated with parental unmet needs.BackgroundParents of children with autism have unmet needs that may negatively impact family members. There is little research examining unmet needs outside Europe or North America.MethodParticipants of this cross‐sectional, correlational study were 41 parents of a child with autism residing in Qatar. Parents completed surveys in Arabic about their sociodemographic characteristics, their unmet needs, their well‐being, social support, and their child's behavior.ResultsRegression analyses were performed to test the research questions. Greater unmet needs were a significant predictor of life satisfaction. Child behavior problems were a significant predictor of unmet needs, namely the need for family support and help explaining their child's diagnosis to others.ConclusionsThe findings suggest that the unmet needs of parents of children with autism are negatively associated with life satisfaction and are heightened in families where children have more behavior problems.ImplicationsThe Qatar government developed a national plan for autism and our results underscore the need to implement programs to support families of children with autism. An important first step is to ensure that developmentally appropriate information is provided to families and to facilitate connections between families and other stakeholders (e.g., other parents and service providers) in their community.

Cultural adaptation of evidence-based interventions for children with developmental disabilities, including autism, is an effective way to increase the effectiveness and sustainment of intervention effects. Such uptake of interventions is especially needed for communities of marginalized and minoritized populations. However, there have been very limited guidelines on how to ensure quality for cultural adaptation in autism. With this gap in mind, we present the Cultural Adaptation Checklist, which was developed in an iterative process with purposes to (a) guide research on the cultural adaptation of evidence-based intervention with diverse populations, and (b) systematically appraise the quality of cultural adaptation conducted in intervention literature. In this article, we describe the Checklist, development process, and how it may guide cultural adaptation in autism research.
