Cultural sensitivity in Sámi tourism: A systematic literature review in the Finnish context

Abstract: The use of Sámi cultures in the Finnish tourism business has been problematic for many decades. The aim of this article is to explore how the notion of cultural sensitivity could help to find alternative approaches and new solutions to this situation, especially for Sámi tourism. “…So far, SLRs in the field of sport tourism have focused on this field's combination with sustainability issues [137][138][139], mobile technologies [140], and services [141] or engaged with a general knowledge agenda [142][143][144]. “…In these kinds of settings, where hosts and tourists come together, cultural sensitivity can be broadly recognized through knowledge, skills, and attitudes that enable people to work well and respond effectively to the interactions [51]. Cultural sensitivity is not only the acceptance of cultural differences between tourists and local communities but also a transformational process that allows individuals to acknowledge interdependence between intercultural groups [52,53]. Cultural sensitivity should, therefore, be at the core in the development delivery of cultural heritage tourism products and experiences and should penetrate and shape the interactions, narratives, and encounters between tourists and local communities [25,51].…”

“…The topics range from commodification, tourism imaginaries, and the indigenous "other" (see, e.g. Mathisen, 2020;Niskala & Ridanpää, 2016;Olsen, 2002Olsen, , 2006Wright, 2018), boundary making (Schilar & Keskitalo, 2018), and indigenous spirituality (Fonneland, 2012), to storytelling (Kramvig & Førde, 2020), the care and protection of Sámi cultures (Saari, Höckert, Lüthje, Kugapi & Mazzullo, 2020), and governance issues (Angell, Nygaard & Selle, 2020;Pashkevich, Stjernström & Lundmark, 2015). Hence, and while focusing more on explicit and unambiguous indigenous topics in Sámi tourism, the research literature has attended less to the way that indigenous identities, meanings and material practices imprint more discreetly on the steps taken by indigenous entrepreneurs when starting and developing tourism ventures in Sápmi, which is the aim of this paper.…”
