Culturally Competent Interventions for Hispanic Adults With Type 2 Diabetes

Abstract: Culturally competent interventions have been developed to improve outcomes for Hispanic adults with type 2 diabetes. The purpose of this systematic review is to synthesize the research on culturally competent interventions for this vulnerable population. A systematic approach was used to locate empirical reports (n = 11). Interventions were multifaceted with the majority demonstrating significant improvements in clinical outcomes, behavioral outcomes, and diabetes-related knowledge. Culturally competent interv… Show more

“…Three of five studies reported improvements in knowledge in the group receiving culturally specific education, and two reported no difference between intervention and controls. Whittemore [25] evaluated culturally appropriate PE in Hispanic adults with type 2 diabetes. Diabetes knowledge was significantly increased for those receiving culturally appropriate education compared to those who did not.…”

“…Four systematic reviews or meta-analyses [15,18,20,25] evaluated the effect of culturally appropriate PE for minority groups on outcomes related to PE. Bailey et al [15] looked at the effect on knowledge of culturally specific PE for child and adult asthmatics from minority groups.…”

“…[502][503][504] Additionally, we identified a systematic review 505 and a metaanalysis 506 on the disparities in type 2 diabetes treatment between high-risk ethnic groups and the general white population and two systematic reviews on culturally appropriate treatment of type 2 diabetes in high-risk populations. 507,508 An updating search, building on the 2008 guidelines of the Canadian Diabetes Association 509 and the systematic review of the US Preventive Services Task Force 501 on type 2 diabetes, yielded an additional 21 articles, of which two were selected. 58,510 We also identified a meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials 511 that studied the impact of tight gylycemic controls on morbidity and mortality.…”

“…Practical reasons for taking patient perspectives into account in shaping OTHP session content, process, and structural elements include enhancing intervention adherence, ensuring the focus is important to patients, maximizing the likelihood that delivery is practically feasible for the targeted population, facilitating culturally competent programming, and ultimately increasing the likelihood of intervention efficacy (Frank, Basch, & Selby, 2014;Whittemore, 2007). Our study findings resulted in a patient-centered schema that can be used to provisionally identify key components of OTHP interventions tailored for low-income, late-middle-aged Latinos served in health care safety-net systems.…”
