Culturally Imprinted Anxiety and the Itinerary of Clinical Trial Projects for Its Management

Abstract: Anxiety has become ubiquitous in modern life, across countries. Cultural theories suggest that high uncertainty avoidance (UA) increases anxiety, while long-term orientation (LTO) decreases it. We question whether a high UA culture in a region attracts research and development (R&D) projects regarding anxiety management, compared to LTO. Furthermore, do these opposite dimensions moderate each other in attracting a pharmaceutical firm’s response? This article explores this link between the UA culture and th… Show more

“…For example, cultural factors were found to have a strong influence on variance in burnout and wellbeing in a study of large groups of medical students across 12 countries (Molodynski et al, 2021). Furthermore, culture has been found to be a determinant of anxiety and depression, with discrepant clinical trial results (Khambaty & Parikh, 2017; Kirmayer, 2001; Malik, 2021). Likewise, cultural response bias was found to be a contributing factor in the difference in subjective wellbeing among immigrants in Australia (Lai et al, 2013).…”

“…The patterns of disclosure vary within countries and between countries during the internationalization process and its outcome. The internationalization of clinical trials has addressed some of the issues (Malik, 2020). Likewise, foreign clinical trials in China have captured some of these patterns (Malik & Yun, 2016).…”

“…Given that cultural distance is calculated from the difference between host and guest, we argue that the concept of cultural distance is not only limited to business research but also can be more widely applied to other research fields (e.g., Malik, 2021; Malik et al, 2021; Malik & Zhao, 2013). In this paper, we attempt to explain whether the discussion on cultural distance can be extended beyond a business setting to explaining Olympic medal performance.…”
