Culturally tailored evidence‐based substance use disorder treatments are efficacious with an American Indian Southwest tribe: an open‐label pilot‐feasibility randomized controlled trial

Abstract: Background and Aims Many evidence‐based treatments (EBTs) for substance use disorder (SUD) exist, yet few are tailored to Indigenous patients. This trial tested the efficacy of a culturally tailored EBT that combined Motivational Interviewing and the Community Reinforcement Approach (MICRA) versus treatment as usual (TAU). Design A mixed efficacy/effectiveness randomized controlled trial of MICRA (n = 38) and TAU (n = 41) using a parallel design with follow‐up assessments at 4‐, 8‐, and 12‐ months post baselin… Show more

“…Venner et al . [8] addressed this research gap by testing the efficacy of a culturally tailored intervention that combined two evidence‐based SUD treatments, motivational interviewing and the community reinforcement approach (MICRA), among AI participants from one southwest tribe. The authors compared substance use outcomes between participants assigned to the culturally tailored MICRA condition and those assigned to receive treatment as usual (TAU)—standard care through the reservation’s outpatient treatment program.…”

“…The authors compared substance use outcomes between participants assigned to the culturally tailored MICRA condition and those assigned to receive treatment as usual (TAU)—standard care through the reservation’s outpatient treatment program. Results demonstrated no evidence of between‐group treatment effects, as participants assigned to both groups improved approximately equally with regard to substance use outcomes [8]. Despite these null effects, Venner and colleagues have propelled the field of SUD treatment research in AI communities forward and helped to open the door to greater representation of AIs in randomized controlled trials (RCTs).…”
