Culture and Innovation: Evidence from the European Union and Neighbouring Countries

Abstract: This exploratory study investigates the effect of different cultural dimensions on different innovation indicators covering as many EU countries and neighbouring countries as possible. The measures of cultural dimensions were composed on the basis of the EVS/WVS data with the help of confirmatory factor analysis. Correlation, regression, graphical and cluster analyses were used. It was confirmed that innovation processes are strongly reliant on culture: power distance, uncertainty avoidance and masculinity tur… Show more

“…These include regulatory quality, rule of law, and control of corruption dimensions that have a direct impact on corporate governance. These indicators have been used as a measure of institutional quality in previous studies (see Charron, Lapuente, & Rothstein, ; Kaasa, ; Law & Azman‐Saini, ; Meon & Weill, ). Social capital was measured through the social variables of the WGI, namely, voice and accountability, political stability and absence of violence, and government effectiveness.…”

“…Due to the lack of data for some developing countries, it is not possible for us to use directly the Hofstede database. Therefore, we employ the composite cultural index proposed by Kaasa (2013) and Kaasa et al (2013), which is computed by applying the principal component analysis to items provided by the World and European Value Surveys and related to the four original dimensions of the Hofstede index. When considering the overlapping set of countries, the single index components derived by Kaasa et al (2013) exhibit correlations as high as 0.80 with respect to the corresponding Hofstede components.…”
