Culture, context and society - The underexplored potential of critical realism as a philosophical framework for theory and practice

Abstract: This article explains how the meta-theoretical framework of critical realism addresses methodological issues of concern to social psychologists and social scientists. The article outlines key tenets of critical realism -its notion of the stratified nature of reality and generative mechanisms as powers in natural and social objects that cause things; its notion of knowledge of reality as stratified rather than only empirical; its acceptance of epistemological but not judgmental relativism; and its monist ontolo… Show more

“…The third paradigm that is gaining momentum in the social and psychological sciences is critical realism (also called scientific realism ) (Bhaskar, 1979/2015; Danemark, Ekstrom, Jakobsen, & Karlsson, 2002; de Souza, 2014; Manicas & Secord, 1983; Pilgrim, 2019; Sayer, 2000). According to proponents of this paradigm, the goal of science is to uncover the causal mechanisms of a phenomenon under inquiry.…”

“…Realists may refer to some empirical regularities that positivist researchers determined, and they may use these regularities as starting points for their further investigations. The application of the realist paradigm is relatively underdeveloped in sociocultural psychology, but it is continuously being represented in some cultural and psychology theorising and research (Chirkov, 2014; D'Andrade, 1999; de Souza, 2014; Reyna, 2017).…”

“…Such an interactive and dynamic culture concept also recognizes that meaning is causally generated and is affected through various cognitive and social processes (e.g., Allwood, 2011a;Atran, Medin & Ross, 2005;de Souza, 2014;Kashima, 2005;Shweder, 1990). Assuming that meaning spreads by means of causal social processes (i.e., communication) allows research on, and understanding about, how meaning is generated and spreads in the part of the society where the applied researcher or social helper wants to intervene.…”

“…Moreover, authors such as Maxwell (2004a,b) argue that causal analysis is compatible with qualitative research. Similarly, there is no necessary contradiction between understanding meaning content and explaining it since it is reasonable to argue, as many authors have done, that meaning and understanding are naturalistic phenomena that are causally linked to the rest of nature (e.g., Allwood, 2011a;Atran et al, 2005;de Souza, 2014;Kashima, 2005;Shweder, 1990).…”

“…It takes an inspiration from cultural psychology of Shweder (1990) and Markus, Kitayama, and Heiman (1996), but develops it further in my view to make it more applicable to broader areas of inquiry, including education, gender, and psychological distress (also see Chiu & Hong, 2013). The collection of articles in this special issue is a welcome extension of the tradition of reflection and innovation on the cultural in the social in the Asian Journal of Social Psychology (e.g., Bond, 2013; de Souza, 2014; Hwang, 2005; Kashima, 2005; Liu, 2017; Yang, 2000).…”
