Fish embryos and larvae undoubtedly depend on maternal provisioning of essential egg components, such as fatty acids (FA), during early ontogeny. But which aspects and stages of batch-specific larval development are modulated by these inherent oocyte traits? This question is of major importance from an ecological, as well as from an aquacultural perspective. We examined the effects of batch-specific non nuclear-genetic egg traits (fatty acid (FA) profiles, egg size, mtDNA fragmentation, cortisol content) already in unfertilized oocytes of pikeperch (Sander lucioperca) and studied their influence on survival (15 dph) and larval performance (length at hatch, stress resistance, first feeding, swimbladder inflation rate, yolk sac and lipid droplet size, growth in weight and length) after hatching under stable laboratory conditions (n = 12 batches). While larval survival and performance were independent of mtDNA fragmentation and cortisol levels, FA profiles affected specific larval traits. Especially FA of the neutral fraction were positively correlated with larval size and growth (16:0, 18:0, 22:1n-9, total saturated FA), swimbladder inflation (arachidonic acid 20:4n-6, total FA) and early first feeding (16:0, 18:0, total saturated FA). Important FA of the polar fraction included 15:0 and 16:1n-7, which showed alternate effects on larval survival, first feeding and growth (length). Furthermore, larval length at hatch was positively correlated with egg diameter. Other larval parameters (yolk sac and lipid droplet size and stress response) were not or only marginally affected by egg traits. Consequently, high oocyte FA deposition fuels fast rates of growth and development during early ontogeny. On the other hand, larvae develop independently of assumed disadvantageous properties (cortisol content, mtDNA damage). Knowledge of this relation allows for the improvement of aquaculture practice, as well as predicting recruitment success in the wild.

The Effect of Different Surface‐Cleaning Devices on the Success of Swim Bladder Inflation in Zander Larvae

The failure of initial swim bladder inflation (SBI) is one of the main obstacles to successful results in Zander (also known as Pikeperch) Sander lucioperca larviculture because the larvae are unable to penetrate the oil layer on the water surface to gulp air. There are numerous technical solutions for cleaning the water surface, including using a sprayer to emulsify the oil contamination and a skimmer for trapping the oil globules on the surface. To investigate the most appropriate method for improving the SBI success rate, three different devices were evaluated in triplicate tanks. In addition to the control tanks, which were not equipped with any surface‐cleaning device other than overflow mesh, two sprayer designs (narrow, covering one‐third of the tank's diameter, versus wide, covering the tank's entire diameter) and an air‐blowing surface skimmer were set for a 16‐d trial. Freshly hatched larvae (7,000 per tank) were divided into four treatment groups in twelve 250‐L larval nursing tanks that shared a common recirculation system. Significantly higher rates of SBI were found in the tanks that were equipped with a wide‐covering sprayer (30.6 ± 13.0%) compared with the control, skimmer, and narrow‐covering sprayer groups (14.7 ± 7.5%, 4.8 ± 1.7%, and 12.2 ± 5.1%, respectively). Thus, the results of the present study indicate that the sprayer design that covers a large portion of the tank’s diameter is an appropriate solution for enhancing SBI rates in Zander larviculture.

Sander lucioperca is an organism of growing importance for the aquaculture industry.Nonetheless, the rearing of S. lucioperca larvae is proving to be a difficult task as it is facing a high mortality rate during hatching and the change to exogenous feeding. To gain insight into growth patterns during this period, the authors analysed pikeperch embryos and larvae from 9 days before hatching to 17 days after hatch. Hereby they were able to describe a natural development by using close to natural conditions based on using a direct flow-through supply of lake fresh water on specimens from a local wild population. The results show that between the early embryonic stages a steady growth was visible. Nonetheless, in between hatching and the start of exogenous feeding, a phase of growth stagnation took place. In the following larval stages, an increased growth with large size variations between individual specimens appeared. Both factors are conspicuous as they can indicate a starting point for cannibalism. With this analysis, the authors can provide a fundament to support the upcoming research on S. lucioperca and aid to optimize size-sorting procedures for a higher survival of pikeperch stock in aquaculture.
