“…This finding is in accord with other reports of apoptosis of extravillous trophoblast [34][35][36]. It is likely that apoptosis of extravillous trophoblast is part of a controlled mechanism for trophoblast proliferation and invasion during normal pregnancy which is perturbed in molar pregnancy.…”

“…In addition, based on morphological criteria, at least some of the apoptotic cells were very likely to be typical decidualized stromal cells, although the lack of a specific marker for decidualized stromal cells limited our ability to demonstrate this unequivocally. Although they express CD10 in vitro [36,37], expression of CD10 by decidual stromal cells in situ is much less consistent, with many cells being negative or focally positive, unlike non-decidualized endometrial stromal cells which are consistently CD10 + [38,39]. Future studies using insulin-like growth factor binding protein (IGFBP-1), another marker of decidualization [40], may be possible but it should be noted that the IGFBP-1 status of decidua in molar pregnancy is unknown.…”

“…To obtain a suspension of fresh cells containing FDC, we used a protocol similar to that reported by Montes et al (18) for fresh decidual stromal cells (DSC). The tonsil was washed in PBS and minced between two scalpels in a small volume of RPMI 1640 with 10% FCS.…”

“…These cells have been shown to express antigens associated with hematopoietic cells (Montes et al 1996), although it was suggested that they are more closely related to bone marrow stromal precursors (García-Pacheco et al 2001). Their morphology and phenotype was described to be similar to myofibroblasts (Oliver et al 1999;Kimatrai et al 2003), α-smooth muscle actin (α-SMA) expressing fibroblastic cells with contractile activity that are involved in wound retraction.…”
