Curaua–Aramid Hybrid Laminated Composites for Impact Applications: Flexural, Charpy Impact and Elastic Properties

Abstract: Curaua, as a leaf-based natural fiber, appears to be a promising component with aramid fabric reinforcement of hybrid composites. This work deals with the investigation of flexural, impact and elastic properties of non-woven curaua–aramid fabric hybrid epoxy composites. Five configurations of hybrid composites in a curaua non-woven mat with an increasing quantity of layers, up to four layers, were laminated through the conventional hand lay-up method. The proposed configurations were idealized with at least 60… Show more

“…The success of this transition is evident in the successful integration of curauá fibers in the construction of vehicle parts, notably in Volkswagen's VW Fox and VW Polo models [236,237]. This significant milestone has further propelled research into the application of curauá fibers not only in the automotive sector but also in various areas such as construction [238][239][240], ballistic armor [241][242][243][244], and biodegradable packaging [245][246][247], among other applications.…”

“…However, this difference is subject to variations due to the specific characteristics of the fibers, which vary from one natural fiber to another. This variation emphasizes the notable discrepancies between the different types of natural fibers documented in the literature [30,[61][62][63][64][65][66][67]. ANOVA was also used to examine the variations in the resistance to energy absorption in the Izod impact test, as shown in Table 12.…”

“…Considering the standard deviation, no significant changes in density were observed. It is important to take into consideration that natural fibers as reinforcement in composites cause mechanical obstruction of the polymer molecules, resulting in an increase of volume fraction and reducing density if higher amounts of fibers will be used 59,75 . The addition of cotton fibers caused a reduction in density, as observed in the result of the 90/5/5 composite, compared to the 95/5/0 composite.…”
