Curli Production and Genetic Relationships Among Escherichia coli from Cases of Bovine Mastitis

Abstract: Curli are adhesive surface structures produced by some Escherichia coli and Salmonella strains that bind host proteins and activate inflammatory mediators. In this study, 61 E. coli isolates from 36 clinical cases of bovine mastitis were characterized using enterobacterial repetitive intergenic consensus-PCR and screened for their ability to produce curli. Effect of curli production on case recovery, based on a return to precase milk yield, was investigated for a subset of 43 isolates from 20 quarters of 19 co… Show more

“…The genes encoding curli fimbriae were present in all isolates, which indicates that differences in phenotype are the result of differences in gene expression, as reported by others (Dyer et al, 2007). Expression of csgD is highly regulated (reviewed by Van Houdt and Michiels, 2005).…”

“…Genome plasticity is the main driver of E. coli phenotypic diversity and evolution [48]; thus, this dynamism is responsible for the relevant differences observed among the pathogenic strains associated with diseases [49]. In the present study, the genomic diversity among vaginal E. coli was assessed through the ERIC-PCR technique as previously applied for animal samples taken from different mucosae [50,51].…”

“…Clinical signs in acute coliform mastitis are induced by LPS and the subsequent release of inflammatory mediators (Lohuis et al, 1988;Burvenich et al, 2003;Kornalijnslijper et al, 2004). No specific virulence determinants have been detected in E. coli isolated in mastitis (Lehtolainen et al, 2003;Wenz et al, 2006a;Dyer et al, 2007;Suojala et al, 2011).…”
