Current Advances in Aptamers for Cancer Diagnosis and Therapy

Abstract: Nucleic acid aptamers are single-stranded oligonucleotides that interact with target molecules with high affinity and specificity in unique three-dimensional structures. Aptamers are generally isolated by a simple selection process called systematic evolution of ligands by exponential enrichment (SELEX) and then can be chemically synthesized and modified. Because of their high affinity and specificity, aptamers are promising agents for biomarker discovery, as well as cancer diagnosis and therapy. In this revie… Show more

“…But none of these articles have reviewed the emerging aptamers technology in the disease diagnosis of aquatic animal and its potential prophylactic and therapeutic properties. The application of aptamers technology has been studied extensively in the past decades, notably in the diagnosis and therapeutics of human infectious diseases (Singh, Manohar, Adegoke, Stenström, & Shanker, ; Ulrich, Cheffer, & Zimbres, ), as well as cancer (Duan, Wang, Shigdar, & Tran, ; Hori, Herrera, Rossi, & Zhou, ; Mayer, Schöler, & Heidarian, ). To date, the application of aptamers technology in infectious disease diagnosis of aquatic animal is mostly limited to viral infections.…”

“…However, the efficient and safe delivery of RNAi-based therapeutics into specific tissues or cell populations is still the principal challenge for their clinical development. Thus, the combination of these functional RNAi with oligonucleotide aptamers into a single chimeric molecule has been extensively explored [ 63 , 64 ] and applied to different cancers, including NSCLC.…”

“…Selections for cell-penetrating aptamers (Tawiah et al 2017) and even selections directly in live animals have also been performed (Mi et al 2010). In recent years, the field has grown exponentially and is increasingly recognized as a powerful biotechnology for biosensing, proteomics, diagnostics, imaging, and targeted drug delivery (Zhou and Rossi 2017;Hori et al 2018).…”
