Current and future control of the wood‐boring pest Anoplophora glabripennis

Abstract: The Asian longhorn beetle (ALB) Anoplophora glabripennis is one of the most successful and most feared invasive insect species worldwide. This review covers recent research concerning the distribution of and damage caused by ALB, as well as major efforts to control and manage ALB in China. The distribution and destruction range of ALB have continued to expand over the past decade worldwide, and the number of interceptions has remained high. Detection and monitoring methods for the early discovery of ALB have d… Show more

“…The ALB is the most serious nonnative invasive species in Europe and North America [5]. Its threat is considerable, as it can target 209 species or cultivars of healthy trees, out of which 101 species exhibit a higher susceptibility, resulting in substantial economic and ecological losses [4,6,15,29,30]. Although eradication programs have achieved a success rate of more than 45%, the task of addressing larger infestation areas continues to present a significant challenge [4].…”

“…Trunk or soil injections and pesticide sprays with imidacloprid have been applied in China, the United States, and Japan to mitigate the population density of ALB [5,14,15]. In Beijing, China, emamectin benzoate has been injected into the trunks of trees in an infested willow forest as an ALB control measure [8].…”

“…The Asian long-horn beetle (ALB), Anoplophora glabripennis Motschulsky (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae) is a serious invasive wood-boring pest in forests [1]. Outbreaks of ALB cause huge economic losses.…”

“…Thus, the ALB is taken seriously by many countries [4,5]. Numerous studies researching and using insecticides with high virulence against ALB at different stages have been conducted [1,6,7]. However, excessive and consecutive use of chemical insecticides can have a harmful effect on the environment and cause resistance of pests to pesticides, which is why alternatives to chemical insecticides are needed [8].…”

“…In the areas and provinces north of Henan, although there are records of distribution of CLB, there are almost no reports of damage caused by CLB (Wei et al, 2011). ALB and CLB have similar ecological and life histories, including diet and feeding behaviors, similar male pheromone components, and they also share multiple hosts in China (Hansen et al, 2015;Javal et al, 2018;Wang, 2019;Wang et al, 2023). ALB and CLB larvae are difficult to distinguish when they first hatch from eggs, but mature larvae of the 2 species can be distinguished by the distinct shape and size of their pigmented pronotal shields (Haack et al, 2010).…”
