Current and Future Roles of Circular RNAs in Normal and Pathological Endometrium

Abstract: The uterine endometrium, which lines the mammalian uterus, is essential for embryo implantation. This lining undergoes significant changes during sexual and menstrual cycles. The endometrium is also associated with hormone-related diseases such as endometriosis and endometrial cancer. Circular RNAs (circRNAs) play a role in various biological processes. Recent studies have determined that circRNAs function in both normal and pathological endometrial environments. Here, we review high-throughput studies pertain… Show more

“…Metastasis and recurrence are common in patients with high-grade EC [ 2 ]. Plenty studies in recent years have revealed the versatile functions of circRNAs in the pathogenesis of EC [ 30 , 31 ]. Among them, the role of circWDR26 in the pathogenesis of EC is still poorly understood.…”

“…The important roles of circRNAs in cancers are emerging [ 5 , 32 , 33 ], but more researches are still required to understand their roles and underlying mechanisms which regulate tumor progression. WDR26 was upregulated in multiple cancers to promote tumor progression [ 30 , 31 ]. Upregulated WDR26 may also lead to elevation of circWDR26.…”

“…Circular RNAs (circRNAs), a subset of long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs), are characterized by a covalently closed loop structure without a 5’-3’ polarity or a poly(A) tail, which increases stability and resistance to RNase R ( 8 , 9 ). In recent years, next-generation sequencing technology has accelerated the discovery of circRNAs, allowing investigation into their biological roles in gene regulation; for instance, circRNAs act as microRNA (miRNA) sponges to bind miRNAs in competitive endogenous RNA (ceRNA) networks ( 10 , 11 ). Emerging evidence suggests that circRNAs may contribute to disease development, including endometriosis ( 8 , 11 ).…”

However, there are few studies on the function of circRNAs in CCs of patients with infertility along with endometriosis.…”

“…And an increasing number of studies have found that circRNAs play an important role in the regulation of gene expression, the development of disease, and are therefore closely associated with physiological processes and various diseases [ 40 ]. In addition, studies have shown that circRNAs are expressed in normal endometrium, endometriosis, and endometrial cancer [ 41 ]. Taken together, these results suggest that circRNAs play an important biological regulatory role in the endometrium.…”
