Current Applications of Facial Volumization with Fillers

Abstract: Facial volumization is widely applied for minimally invasive facial rejuvenation both as a solitary means and in conjunction with surgical correction. Appropriate facial volumization is dependent on patient characteristics, consistent longitudinal anatomical changes, and qualities of fillers available. In this article, anatomical changes seen with aging are illustrated, appropriate techniques for facial volumization are described in the setting of correct filler selection, and potential complications are addre… Show more

“…Cheek augmentation targets include the lateral, middle, medial malar, and submalar areas. 39 , 40 The ideal cheek has more volume superiorly with an apex that typically requires augmentation either laterally 20 (as seen in white females) or medially (as seen in men, Asian females), with a smooth ogee curve. 5 The medial and lateral malar eminences are best corrected using small bolus injections in the supraperiosteal plane using the depot technique and a high G′ filler.…”

“…In the author's opinion, due to the significant collagenstimulating properties of PCL in Ellansé, its use is best suited to advanced practitioners experienced in using both needle and cannulae, to obtain optimum results and reduce the risk of complications. It is important to have a thorough understanding of the facial ageing process and anatomy to make a suitable assessment of the patient and use facial mapping, which helps practitioners to identify the areas to be augmented, to avoid danger zones, and to plan the overall injection strategy (Cotofana et al, 2016;Solish, 2016;Wilson et al, 2016;Woodward, 2016).…”

“…19 The rise in filler use may be attributable to the paradigm shift from a 2-dimensional view to a 3-dimensional perception of the face, with aging impacted tremendously in the medial aspect by volume loss. 6,20,21 In fact, many cosmetic medicine practitioners are adhering to the mantra of lift laterally and fill medially, acknowledging the profound rejuvenation effect that occurs when placing volume in areas such as the tear trough, malar projection, nasolabial fold, and lips.…”
