Current challenges of biomass refinery and prospects of emerging technologies for sustainable bioproducts and bioeconomy

Abstract: The depletion of fossil resources and the resulting global warming are the primary motivators for moving from a fossil‐based to a biobased economy. Biorefineries, like petro‐based refineries, offer a green and sustainable option for producing marketable biobased goods through decarbonization pathways, hence upgrading the bioeconomy. In the context of the industrial revolution, economic and environmental sustainability are critical in adopting biorefinery systems. However, biorefineries still face numerous hurd… Show more

“…The proteins obtained through this method exhibited resistance to oxidation and had low viscosities, signifying their suitability for incorporation into food products. However, it has some limitations, which encompass its complexity, operational expenses, difficulties in upscaling the procedure, inconsistent protein retrieval, and substantial energy consumption [59]. However, despite these challenges, the enzymatic protein extraction technique is advantageous because of its minimal impact on the environment and its positive impact on protein functionality and recovery [46].…”

“…However, biorefining processes face major challenges associated with uncertainties that arise from highly variable feedstocks, fluctuation, and complex process dynamics 5 . Variations in the composition, quality, availability, and external environmental factors, such as weather conditions and market fluctuations, propagate through the process, resulting in significant uncertainty in production.…”

“…Industrial symbiosis is firmly establishing itself as a circular economy operational tool for the implementation of the energy transition at various levels throughout the world [1]. It deals with the recycling of waste materials and energy generated during a production process to replace conventional production inputs during other conventionally disengaged processes, whether they are owned by the same company or different companies [2]. The circular economy is also characterized as an industrial system that is consciously restorative or regenerative [3].…”
