Current evidence does not support whole body vibration in clinical practice in children and adolescents with disabilities: a systematic review of randomized controlled trial

Abstract: The low to very-low quality of evidence suggests caution in recommending the use of this approach. New studies could change the findings of this review. PROSPERO registration: CRD42017060704.

“…The efficacy of WBV as a bone anabolic therapy in children with severe motor disabilities appears to be mostly beneficial. However, despite the favorable data reported, there is still not enough evidence to support WBV in clinical practice in children and adolescents with disabilities, which also is in agreement with a recent systematic review [ 48 ••].…”

“…Across all applications of WBV in the various research fields, the evidence concerning its effects on various functions has been inconsistent (e.g., see these reviews [6,8,10,[24][25][26][27][28][29]). Based on the inconclusive evidence within the different fields, no firm conclusions about the effects of WBV training machines can be drawn as of now.…”

“…In its original application, the short- and long-term effects on physical functioning within different scientific fields including medicine and movement sciences were examined [ 8 10 ]. More recently, WBV was also evaluated for its effects on, among others, blood pressure [ 11 ], body mass [ 12 , 13 ], pulmonary function [ 14 ], quality of life [ 15 ] and cognitive functioning [ 16 18 ].…”

“…Another alternative strategy concerns wholebody vibration. By soliciting muscles through the stretching reflex and increasing inter and intramuscular coordination, 48 whole-body vibration might also find a place in the physiotherapy armamentarium aiming to improve leg muscle function and mobility of patients with cystic fibrosis. [49][50][51] However, we were not able to find any randomized controlled trials assessing the effects of the latter technique on muscle function and functional performance in cystic fibrosis.…”
